Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup water
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts (such as pecans or almonds)
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
- Chocolate sauce (for dipping, optional)
- Caramel sauce (for drizzling, optional)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine the water, unsalted butter, and salt. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring occasionally to ensure the butter melts completely.
- Once boiling, remove from heat and add the all-purpose flour and ground cinnamon all at once. Stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until the mixture forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan (about 1-2 minutes).
- Allow the dough to cool for about 5 minutes.
- Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition until the dough is smooth and glossy.
- Stir in the vanilla extract and chopped nuts until evenly distributed.
- In a deep frying pan or heavy-bottomed pot, pour enough vegetable oil to fill it about 2-3 inches deep.
- Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Test the oil by dropping a small piece of dough into it; if it sizzles and rises, its ready.
- Fill a piping bag fitted with a large star tip with the churro dough.
- Pipe small bite-sized pieces of dough (about 1 inch long) into the hot oil, frying in batches if necessary.
- Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and puffed. Use a slotted spoon to turn them gently.
- Remove from oil and place on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
- In a shallow bowl, combine granulated sugar and remaining ground cinnamon.
- While warm, roll churro bites in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until fully coated.
- Arrange churro bites on a serving platter. Serve warm or at room temperature.
- Drizzle with caramel sauce or serve with chocolate sauce for dipping.
- Optionally, sprinkle extra chopped nuts on top before serving.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat in an oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes.
- For longer storage, freeze in a single layer, then transfer to a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Reheat from frozen as mentioned above.
Notes
- Ensure the oil is at the correct temperature for optimal frying.
- Feel free to customize the nuts used in the dough for different flavors.
