  • Author: Dottie
  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: 8-10 pies 1x

Description

These crispy fried apple pies are filled with sweet, cinnamon-spiced apples, making them a delightful treat for dessert or a snack. Easy to prepare and sure to impress, they are best enjoyed warm, optionally dusted with powdered sugar or served with vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 package of refrigerated pie crusts (2 crusts)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon milk (for egg wash)
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil)

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and dice the apples into small pieces (about 1/4 inch).
  2. In a medium bowl, combine diced apples, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, lemon juice, cornstarch, and vanilla extract. Mix well and let sit for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Allow refrigerated pie crusts to sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes.
  4. Roll out one pie crust on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thick. If using store-bought, skip this step.
  5. Cut the rolled-out crust into rectangles (about 3 inches by 4 inches).
  6. Repeat with the second pie crust.
  7. Place 1-2 tablespoons of apple filling in the center of a pie crust rectangle.
  8. Moisten the edges with water to help seal.
  9. Place another rectangle on top, press edges to seal, and crimp with a fork.
  10. Repeat until all filling is used, re-rolling scraps if necessary.
  11. Whisk together egg and milk for the egg wash.
  12. Make small slits on top of each pie for steam to escape.
  13. Brush the tops with egg wash.
  14. Heat about 2 inches of oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  15. Fry a few pies at a time for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  16. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  17. Repeat with remaining pies, adjusting heat as necessary.
  18. Let pies cool for a few minutes before serving.
  19. Serve warm, optionally dusted with powdered sugar or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying to achieve a crispy texture.
  • Feel free to experiment with different apple varieties for varied flavors.
  • These pies can be stored in an airtight container for a couple of days, but are best enjoyed fresh.
