Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of day-old French bread (about 1216 ounces), cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 can (12.5 ounces) cinnamon roll dough (with icing)
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cut the day-old French bread into 1-inch cubes. If using fresh bread, let it sit out for a few hours to dry.
  3. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray.
  4. Evenly place the cubed bread in the greased baking dish. If using nuts, sprinkle them over the bread cubes.
  5. In a large mixing bowl, crack the 6 large eggs and whisk until well combined and slightly frothy.
  6. Pour in 1 cup of whole milk and 1 cup of heavy cream into the egg mixture.
  7. Add 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Whisk until smooth.
  8. Pour the egg mixture over the cubed bread, ensuring all pieces are coated. Press down gently with a spatula.
  9. Open the cinnamon roll dough and cut each roll into quarters.
  10. Scatter the quartered cinnamon rolls over the top of the bread mixture.
  11. Drizzle the icing from the cinnamon roll package over the casserole.
  12. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight if desired.
  13. Remove the plastic wrap and bake in the preheated oven for 45-55 minutes, until golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  14. If the top browns too quickly, cover loosely with aluminum foil.
  15. Let the casserole cool for 10-15 minutes before slicing.
  16. Cut into squares and serve warm, dusted with powdered sugar if desired.
  17. Serve with maple syrup, whipped cream, or fresh fruit.
