  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (optional, adjust to taste)
  • 4 ounces vodka (high-quality recommended)
  • 2 ounces fresh lemon juice
  • 1 ounce Cointreau (or other orange liqueur)
  • 1 ounce blackberry puree (from above)
  • ½ ounce simple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon twist or fresh blackberries, for garnish
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest

Instructions

  1. Combine blackberries and water in a small saucepan.
  2. Simmer over medium heat for 5-7 minutes, until blackberries soften and release juices, stirring occasionally.
  3. (Optional) Add sugar to taste, stirring until dissolved.
  4. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  5. Puree in a blender or food processor until smooth.
  6. (Optional) Strain through a fine-mesh sieve for a smoother puree.
  7. Chill until ready to use.
  8. Combine sugar and lemon zest in a shallow dish.
  9. Moisten the rim of a martini glass with a lemon wedge or damp paper towel.
  10. Dip the rim into the sugar mixture, rotating to coat evenly.
  11. Set aside.
  12. Chill a martini glass in the freezer for a few minutes.
  13. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes (about two-thirds full).
  14. Add vodka, lemon juice, Cointreau, blackberry puree, and simple syrup to the shaker.
  15. Close tightly and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds.
  16. Strain into the prepared martini glass.
  17. Garnish with a lemon twist or fresh blackberries.
  18. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Adjust sweetness to taste by adding more simple syrup or lemon juice.
  • Experiment with other berries like raspberries or blueberries.
  • For a mocktail, substitute vodka with sparkling water or club soda and use a non-alcoholic orange liqueur substitute.
  • Infuse vodka with blackberries for an extra layer of flavor.
  • Make a batch ahead of time and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Add ice and shake just before serving.
