Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of thick-cut bread (such as brioche or challah)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • Maple syrup, for serving
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Slice the loaf of bread into 1-inch thick slices (about 8-10 slices).
  3. Arrange the slices in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, overlapping them slightly.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, crack the 6 large eggs and whisk until well beaten.
  5. Add in the 1 cup of whole milk and 1 cup of heavy cream, whisking until combined.
  6. Stir in the 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Whisk until smooth.
  7. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the arranged bread slices, ensuring each slice is well coated.
  8. Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight.
  9. In a medium bowl, combine the 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour, and 1/2 cup of rolled oats.
  10. Pour in the 1/2 cup of melted unsalted butter and mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  11. Remove the baking dish from the refrigerator and sprinkle the crunchy topping evenly over the soaked bread slices.
  12. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set (a knife inserted in the center should come out clean).
  13. Let it cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
  14. Cut the French toast into squares or rectangles.
  15. Serve warm, drizzled with maple syrup and a dusting of powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

  • For best results, allow the bread to soak overnight for maximum flavor absorption.
