Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf of thick-cut bread (such as brioche or challah)
- 6 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- Maple syrup, for serving
- Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Slice the loaf of bread into 1-inch thick slices (about 8-10 slices).
- Arrange the slices in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, overlapping them slightly.
- In a large mixing bowl, crack the 6 large eggs and whisk until well beaten.
- Add in the 1 cup of whole milk and 1 cup of heavy cream, whisking until combined.
- Stir in the 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Whisk until smooth.
- Pour the custard mixture evenly over the arranged bread slices, ensuring each slice is well coated.
- Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight.
- In a medium bowl, combine the 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour, and 1/2 cup of rolled oats.
- Pour in the 1/2 cup of melted unsalted butter and mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Remove the baking dish from the refrigerator and sprinkle the crunchy topping evenly over the soaked bread slices.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set (a knife inserted in the center should come out clean).
- Let it cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
- Cut the French toast into squares or rectangles.
- Serve warm, drizzled with maple syrup and a dusting of powdered sugar if desired.
Notes
