Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cans (5 oz each) tuna in water, drained
- 1 medium apple, diced
- 1/2 cup celery, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup red onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt (or mayonnaise)
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/4 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)
- 1/4 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped (optional)
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
- Leafy greens (for serving, optional)
Instructions
- Start by gathering all your ingredients on a clean countertop or workspace.
- Open the cans of tuna and drain the water thoroughly. Use a fork to flake the tuna into smaller pieces in a mixing bowl.
- Wash the apple under cold water. Core and dice the apple into small cubes, leaving the skin on for added texture and nutrients. Place the diced apple in a separate bowl to prevent browning.
- Wash and finely chop the celery into small, uniform pieces.
- Peel and finely chop the red onion. Soak in cold water for about 10 minutes if you prefer a milder flavor.
- If using nuts, chop the walnuts or pecans into small pieces.
- In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the plain Greek yogurt (or mayonnaise) with the Dijon mustard and lemon juice. Stir until smooth and creamy.
- Add salt and black pepper to the dressing. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flaked tuna, diced apple, chopped celery, and red onion. Add nuts if using.
- Pour the dressing over the mixture and gently fold until everything is evenly coated. Avoid mashing the tuna or apple pieces.
- Taste the salad and adjust seasoning if necessary.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or transfer to an airtight container.
- Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
- After chilling, gently stir the salad to redistribute the dressing and ingredients.
- Serve on a bed of leafy greens, in a sandwich, or on its own.
- Garnish with freshly chopped parsley and consider adding avocado slices or feta cheese for extra flavor.
